Nyango M. Nambangi wrote about this song: "No meaning! From an African language which none of us now knows."

Notes

Loes wrote about the meaning of this song:

"Dear mama lisa, I don't know the song Amba Sherina. But I heard it on your site and the women who's singing also says it is a marching song. Is it possible that the song is hamba Sherina? Hamba is a word i have often heard in African songs and means something like walking or marching in Zulu of Xhosa. Like in the song Siyahamba (we are marching), hamba nathi (come walk with us) The meaning of amba and hamba you can find here

I asked Nyango about this idea and here's what she wrote:

"Yes, it is interesting. But I don't think it has to do with 'hamba'. The tune does not sound South African at all and we do have words like 'amba' in many of the Cameroonian and I think Nigerian languages. We used to think 'sherina' had to do with 'cherie' a French word commonly used in Cameroon to mean 'darling'. But with all the mutations that happen with songs sung by African soldiers who fought in other parts of the continent, it is difficult to say."

If anyone know anything about the meaning of this song, please email me. -Mama Lisa
