Notes

-In August 1807 Joseph von Eichendorff wrote in his diaries about his unfulfilled love for Käthchen Förster. This breach of fidelity probably inspired the poem.
-In 1813 the poem was published under the pseudonym "Florens" and under the title "Lied" (Song) in the anthology "Deutscher Dichterwald".
-In 1814, Friedrich Glück set the poem to music. It was particularly popular as a choral setting by Friedrich Silcher under the title "Untreue Bekanntheit". -Excerpt from German Wikipedia
