A Christmas Song from Scotland – Who’s That Up the Chimney?

image

Who’s That Up the Chimney? is a Christmas song written by Scottish singer Ewan McVicar.  Ewan sent this song to us when we asked him if he knew of any Christmas songs from Scotland.  Here’s what he wrote:

I was on a tram in the Urals city of Perm (Russia), and the teacher conveying me said they wanted me to teach a Scots kids Xmas song. Aint none in Scots, so I made up the attached on the journey. It goes really great with the kids.

You can listen to Ewan singing his song below and read the lyrics.  The illustrations are by Gracie Gralike.

Who’s That Up the Chimney
by Ewan McVicar

Who’s that up the chimney?
Who’s that up the chimney?
Who’s that up the chimney?
I hope it’s Santa Claus.

I hope he’s brought some presents,
I hope he’s brought some presents,
I hope he’s brought some presents,
‘Cause I’ve been really good.

I hope it’s not the chimney sweep,
I hope it’s not the chimney sweep,
I hope it’s not the chimney sweep,
That would be a swizz*.

I’d like to see his reindeer,
I’d like to see his reindeer,
I’d like to see his reindeer,
Are their noses red.

I hope that he comes back again,
I hope that he comes back again,
I hope that he comes back again,
Comes back again next year.

Who’s that up the chimney? (Santa)
Who’s that up the chimney? (Santa)
Who’s that up the chimney? (Santa)
I hope it’s Santa Claus. (It is!)

*A "swizz" is British slang meaning, "a swindle or disappointment."
