Notes

"Compère" and "commère" were the way a child's godparents would address each other. The word came to be an informal form of "Mr." and "Mrs." in tales and a very informal way of addressing someone (usually old people). Nowadays, "compère" can mean "partner", "buddy" or "stooge" and a "commère" is a gossip.
