Maya wrote: "I think this is called a 'kolyada', like a carol in English. Children and adults used to dress up and go from house to house singing Christmas carols (it seems that it's still done in Ukraine).

In Russia, Christmas is celebrated twice, on December 25th and on January 7th –the latter is the real Orthodox Christmas- but since in Western countries it's celebrated on December 25th, for us that's only the beginning of the celebrations! Then there's New Year Day –like everywhere else- but also January 14th, the Old New Year. With the calendar change in 1917 in order to be 'with' Western Europe, there's been this shift in the dates. Yet, traditionally, the Old New Year is above all an opportunity to see friends or family members you weren't able to see on the 1st or the 7th of January!
