Notes

*Literally it's "crop" which is the pouched enlargement of a bird's gullet that holds food at the start of digestion.

Monique Palomares wrote me in July 2004, "This rhyme is told with two tones of voice, and when the child knows it well, it's asked and answered. While saying the last lines, they used to pretend to spank the child (as the Granny was spanked).

My grandmother played this rhyme with me when I was a child, but she had left Spain in 1930, so it's pretty far older than me and maybe no longer in use in present Spain."
