Poptropica – An Educational Online Game for Tweens

Poptropica turned three today.  It’s an online, educational game for kids aged 6 – 15.  The game is basically free though you can spend money to buy extra items.

My daughter, her cousin and their friends play.  They’re 7-11 years old. They don’t spend any money on the game.

I joined it today to see what it’s all about.  You create a character and your character goes on a quest.

On the quest you learn things… like who built the Statue of Liberty and how they lived in ancient Greece.

Here’s my daughter’s description, "You go to different islands and they all have different journeys you take.  Some are hard and some are easy and some are medium.  You complete an island and you get 100 credits to spend at the Poptropica shop.  There you can buy costumes, bubblegum, a room and lots more."  As far as she can tell, you don’t interact with your friends in the game.  She highly recommends it though!

Below is a video you can watch that shows characters moving around the Poptropica world.

If you have kids who enjoy games that involve quests, check it out with them at Poptropica.

Happy gaming!
