Good News for the Bees

Bees have been around for a long, long, long time.  Above is a photo of a 100 million year old bee fossil.  It was preserved in amber.

The bad news about bees is that their hives have been perishing.  The US alone has lost 20 – 40% of it’s hives to "colony collapse" in the past four years.  That means tens of billions of bees are gone.

The good news is that scientists, working with the military, may have finally discovered the culprit: a fungus combined with a virus.  This combination was found in all of the collapsed colonies.  An anti-fungal agent might take care of the problem.  Let’s hope that scientists will come up with a solution to save our bees soon… so we can say again, "Every bee’s honey is sweet".
