Notes

*Here a marriageable young man.

There are variations to this song. For example, instead of "Elle montra deux dents de devant" (She showed two front teeth) it goes "Elle montra toutes ses dents" (She showed all her teeth) or instead of "La seconde s'en va branlant" (The second goes wobbly"), it goes "La seconde s'envole au vent" (The second flies away in the wind). Some include a verse said by the brand-new widower, "Avec l'argent de la vieille / j'en aurai une de quinze ans" (With the old woman's money, I'll have a fifteen-year-old girl) as you can hear in the 2nd video.

Monique said, "I've known this since I was a kid. And at the end, we would sing, 'Le meilleur des dentifrices, c'est le dentifrice Tsoin-Tsoin'." (Translation: "The best toothpaste, is the toothpaste called Tsoin-Tsoin." "Tsoin-Tsoin" is the sound cymbales make like "crash clang".

Monique found more verses here as follows:

-Le meilleur des dentifrices, c'est le dentifrice Prodent.
-Le bouchon est en plastique et le tube est en fer-blanc.
-En vente dans toutes les pharmacies au prix de cinq francs seulement.
-Achetez plutôt l' grand tube, il est double et coute neuf francs.
-Réductions familles nombreuses, militaire et bonne d'enfants.

The best toothpaste is Prodent toothpaste.
The cap is plastic and the tube is tinplate.
On sale in all pharmacies for just five francs.
Rather buy the large tube, it's double and costs nine francs.
Large families, soldiers and nanny discounts.

The lyrics in the video below are…

À Paris, y'a une vieille (x2) (In Paris is an old woman)
Une vieille de cent ans (A hundred year old woman)
Et ran plan plan la vieille (Rat-a-tat-tat, the old woman)
Une vieille de cent ans (A hundred year old woman)
Et ran plan plan. (Rat-a-tat-tat!)

Elle entra dans une noce (She entered a wedding party)
Et s'assit près d'un galant…(And sat down near a young man)

Beau galant, si tu m'épouses (Handsome young man, if you marry me)
Je te ferai riche d'argent… (I'll make you rich with money)

Je n'épouse pas les vieilles (I wouldn't marry old women)
Dont je n'ai pas vu les dents…(Whose teeth I haven't seen)

Et la vieille éclate de rire (And the old woman burst out laughing)
Et montre deux dents de devant… (And showed two front teeth)

La première était toute noire (The first one was all black)
La deuxième s'envole au vent…(The second one flies away with the wind)

Le lundi c'est jour de noce (Monday is the wedding day)
Le mardi jour d'enterrement… (Tuesday, burial day)

La morale de cette histoire (The moral of this story)
C'est qu'il faut se laver les dents… (Is you must brush your teeth).
