This dance song probably derived from the Calinda dance which was reported to have been performed in New Orleans by Afro-Caribbean slaves brought to Louisiana. (1)

It's still sung and danced to throughout the year and for Mardi Gras in Louisiana. It's usually sung in French and then in English.
