*"Pousser la chansonnette", literally "to push the little song" just means "to sing", the connotation being "to sing a light song with no great skills involved".
Matelots can be find in singular form (matelot), the last line of the 2nd verse can be found as "Égayera le bâtiment" (Will cheer up the ship).
