People everywhere love Christmas – but we don’t all celebrate it the same way.
Mama Lisa’s Christmas Around The World is a celebration of the diversity and love with which many different cultures mark this joyful time of year.
You’ll read about:
- How in Italy it’s not Santa Claus who gives gifts to all the children. It’s La Befana, a friendly witch!
- How Scandinavians mark the end of the season by “plundering” the Christmas Tree on St. Knut’s Day. That’s a fun way to get children to help with the post-holiday clean-up!
- How in Colombia, in the Southern Hemisphere, it’s usually warm in December. So Christmas is celebrated like a giant outdoor block party!
The first part of the book covers some of the traditions that take place on days other than Christmas itself, like St. Nick’s Day and Epiphany. The history and meaning of these holidays is discussed, often with examples of traditional songs.
The second part presents beloved traditions and songs from many different nations. The songs are given in the original languages and with English translations.
What makes the book really special is the many comments from Mama Lisa’s correspondents who have shared stories and memories from their own lives. The memories of childhood touch us forever!
Many of the songs featured also include links to the Mama Lisa website, where you can find recordings, videos and sheet music.
Merry Christmas!

Roula was trying to help up find the song at the link just above, but she wrote that she ccouldn’t figure out which song it was and that she could only think that it the one of the link that says “zip”.
This makes sense to me because when you click it on it says, “3andi_bisi.zip”.
I tried that one and couldn’t open it.
The one that looks like a disk next to it says “3andi_bisi.rm” – so far I can’t get it to work. I was able to listen with the plugin in Internet Explorer. I hear a cat in the background meowing.

Hello everyone. I am second generation Leb-American but don’t speak Arabic that well. I am trying to find out the words to the Lebanese nursery rhyme that the character “Mo-Mo” sang on the Showtime series Nurse Jackie. It was so beautiful!
Hope someone can help.

Hi Joumana:
I was taken by the same song on Nurse Jackie. I was only able to hear a little of it before the show closed, but in English it goes like this:
A bird appeared on the window
And said to me, oh Nou-Nou,
Hide me with you, please hide me with you
I beg you, Nou-Nou
I asked him, where are you from
He said, from the edge of the sky
I asked him where are you coming from
He said, from the neighbor’s house
I asked him whom do you fear,
He said ….
Hope this helps. If you find out the name of it in Arabic, please let me know so I can find it. I was born in Lebanon and am fluent but no one in my family recognizes the song. If you need to words in Arabic, let me know. I still have it on Tivo.

The song on nurse Jackie was Asfour. You can do a search for it on YouTube…sung by Omeima/Omayma. I’m trying to find the sheet music for that same song which is how I ended up here. Beautiful song. Ma salama to all.
