Animal Fair - American Children's Songs - The USA - Mama Lisa's World: Children's Songs and Rhymes from Around the World - Intro Image

Notes

Heather sent us this other verse...

Animal fair part two:

Said a flea to a fly in a flue, said the flea,
"Oh, what shall we do?"
Said the flea, "Let us fly!"
Said the fly "Let us flee!"
So they flew through a flaw in the flue.

Comments

Sonya Smith wrote me, "This is one that my grandmother used to sing to my little boy, up until her recent death."

This song can be found in print as early as 1898.

Listen

Here's the version in the mp3:

I went to the animal fair,
The birds and the beasts were there,
The big baboon by the light of the moon
Was combing his auburn hair.
The monkey he got drunk
And sat on the elephant's trunk,
The elephant sneezed and fell on his knees
And that was the end of the monk,
The monk, the monk, the monk,
Said a flea to a fly in a flue,
Said the flea, "Oh, what shall we do?"
Said the flea, "Let us fly!"
Said the fly, "Let us flee!"
So they flew through a flaw in the flue.
