"Growing up we sang this with 'crushed up parakeet' as the third line." -Gary

Here's the version Gary grew up with:

Great green gobs of greasy grimy gopher guts
Mutilated monkey meat
Crushed up parakeet
French fried eyeballs
Rolling down the dirty street...

and then something about forgetting or bringing a spoon ...

*****
Here's another version we were sent:

Great big globs of greasy, grimy gopher guts,
Mutilated monkey meat
French fried parakeet
Wormy vomit flooding down the street
And I forgot my spoon.

*****
Here's another one...

My name is Jennifer Haroldson and this is the version that I know...

Great big globs of greasy grimy gopher guts,
Mutilated monkey butts
Roasted, toasted parakeets
Luke warm vomit
Floating down the avenue
And I forgot my spoon...

But I brought a straw!!!

"The version I grew up with is a little different...

Great green gobs of
greasy, grimy, gopher gut,
mutilated monkey meat,
toasted dirty birdie feet,
lukewarm vomit rolling
down the alley street
and me without my spoon,
but I got a straw.

Great green globs of greasy grimy gopher guts
Mutilated monkey meat
Pretty birdies little feet
Rolling eyeballs cooking in a pan of blood
And for dessert a cake of mud.

We received this note from Samantha Parish:

My husband's grandma and great grandma say:

Great green gobs of
mentholated monkey meat
little dirty Birdy feet
french fries eyeballs
in a bowl with bugs
but I forgot my spoon...
but I got my straw.

Then they make a slurping noise at the kids and kids giggle and say ewwww then ask them to sing it again.

When I heard this song as a child, I loved it, perfectly disgusting song for the boys to sing… so nasty!

I heard it in the form of a recipe… Delightfully Disgusting Dishes (Alternative Name of the Song)… here is how I learned it…

Great Green Gobs of Greasy Grimy Gopher Guts
Diced Up Dirty Birdie Feet
Mutilated Monkey Meat
French Fried Eye-Balls Rolled Around a Toilet Seat
Shucks I Forgot My Spoon

Purple Pails of All Purpose Porpoise Puss
Chopped Up Baby Parrot Feet
Mutilated Monkey Meat
Sautéed Skunk Tails Always Such a Yummy Treat
This Time I Brought My Spoon.

Cheers,

Kris Tyte

Cyndi H. sent this version:

Great green gobs of greasy, grimy gopher guts,
Mutilated monkey meat,
Itsy bitsy birdie feet,
French fried eye-balls,
Rolling down a dirty street,
And I forgot my spoon.

But not my straw…..

"The version of Great Green Gobs that I learned in elementary school was similar to the one that had two verses/melodies, but the words went like this:

Great green gobs of greasy, grimy gopher guts
Mutilated monkey meat
Little birdies' smelly feet
French-fried eyeballs floating in a pool of blood
And me without my spoon.

(Second melody)
So give me a trash sandwich
With lard on top
Gopher vomit, and camel snot
Elephant eyeballs chopped in two
Eat it [insert name] it's good for you!

I just thought I'd write in, because I was actually trying to remember/find this version online but couldn't, and I ended up remembering on my own later that night.

Hope this helps someone else in the future, as I loved this song as a kid. I remember making mouse-drawn (in MS Paint) images to go with it, and made it into a slideshow on Powerpoint. This was back using, oh... Probably Windows 98? Then I lost the file when the vacuum cleaner ate my flash drive. Good times.

Sincerely,
Sarah Peterson"

"I was looking for a version of this song to play to my high school students who happen to be from a boys boarding school. They are returning to campus and thinking of them keeping their areas clean made me think of this song. My version from Girl Scouts 40 years ago:

Great green gobs of greasy, grimy, gopher guts,
Mutilated monkey meat,
Dirty little birdie feet,
French fried eyeballs boiling in a pool of blood.
Darn, I forgot my spoon!"

"The version we sang some 50 years ago was

Great green gobs of greasy, grimy gopher guts
Mutilated monkey meat
Little birdies' chopped up feet
One small can of all-purpose porpoise pus
Served without a spoon...."

*****
Tim Sheffield sent this version:

Great green gobs of grounded up gorilla guts,
Mutilated monkey meat,
Bloody dirty birdie feet,
Vulture vomit hanging from a tree
And I didn't bring a spoon, but I have a straw
Slurp!

Carol from Michigan wrote, "This is how i learned it in the 70's..."

Gobs and gobs of
Greasy, grimy gopher guts
Mutilated monkey meat
Dirty little birdie feet

Floating in a bowl of blood
Buy it at your favorite store
They're frozen tooooooo!

Larry Billings sent this "Rural Tennessee version from the 1960s"...

Great green gobs of Greasy Grimy Gopher Guts,
Mutilated Monkey Meat, Purpled lighted People's feet,
Great green gobs of Greasy Grimy Gopher Guts,
and, ME without a spoon, WITHOUT A SPOON!

Skyler Gonsalves sent this version, calling it a Family Halloween Song:

Two great gobs of greasy grimy gopher guts, dried up monkeys feet, concentrated birdies beak, two big eyeballs floating in a pool of blood, and you forgot your spoon.

Cindy Pahl wrote, "The song I learned as a child went like this….

Great, green gobs of greasy, grimy gopher guts,
Mutilated monkey meat,
Dirty little birdie feet.
All packed up in a 1 pint jar of all purpose porpoise pus.
That's what we're having for dinner!"

Scott Rayow sent his version (found in the Song Notes) with a recording of the tune and this note, "I've recorded me plunking it out on keyboard. The difference between this and the standard 'Old Gray Mare' tune begins in the 'spoon' line, and then the whole thing changes. New melody, new rhythm. The music continues through the 'fingernails dipped in goo' (or 'doo' if you prefer)... hanging nice and long on the 'oooh' sound... and then the final line is yelled out triumphantly, each word a quick beat: 'EAT it jerk it's GOOD for you!'"

Here's his version once again:

(1st section)

Gobs & gobs of greasy grimy gopher guts
mutilated monkey meat
little birdies' dirty (turdy) feet
all wrapped up in alligator purple puss
you forgot your spoon…

(2nd section, different melody)

Cows eyeballs, nuts on top
elephants vomit monkey snot
fingernails dipped in goo (doo)...
eat it jerk it's good for you!
