Mother’s Day in Mexico with a Spanish Song

Mother’s Day in Mexico is called Día de las Madres in Spanish. It’s held on May 10th every year. The evening of the 9th is also important. Grown children are expected to spend the evening before Mother’s Day with their Moms too.

Many Mexican mothers wake up to their children singing Las Mañanitas to them. Las Mañanitas is a song that’s also sung on birthdays.

English Translation:

Finally, according to Karen Hursh Graber of the site Mexican Hot or …Not, “One of the most charming customs of all is that practiced in many Mexican churches, the early morning singing of Las Mañanitas and distribution of tamales and atole to all the local moms.”

Atole is a special Mexican hot chocolate.

A Hebrew Song for Mother’s Day called “Mommy, Precious to Me”

Deborah Ivri sent me a wonderful song and recording recently that sounded perfect for Mother’s Day. Though Mother’s Day is not officially celebrated in Israel, it is unofficially. Here’s what Deborah said about it…

Here in Israel Mother’s Day is not an official holiday, but because of the vast amount of American Jews and South African Jews, maybe even Russians also, it is celebrated. Even schools and kindergartens do something for Mother’s and Father’s Day. The song I sent you was sung at my son’s kindergarten last year for all the Moms.

The song Deborah sent me is called Eima Yikara Li in Hebrew. Below you’ll find the mp3 recording of Deborah singing it, then you’ll find the Hebrew transliteration, and finally, the English translation.

A Bolivian Song about May in Spanish with an English Translation

Here’s a song from Bolivia about a girl talking to her mother in the month of May. May is when Mothers Day is celebrated in Bolivia. This might be a nice song for the occasion.

A Mothers’ Day Song and Rhyme in Spanish with English Translations

Cecilia Campos from Peru sent me a rhyme and a song for Mothers’ Day in Spanish and with English translations. Here’s the rhyme, song, the tune and Cecilia’s comments…

I’m teaching my son a rhyme for Mother’s Day. I created it when I was a teacher, for my first graders. Here it is in Spanish, with an English translation:

A mi Mamá
(Spanish)

Mamita querida
de mi corazon
yo te quiero mucho
con todo mi amor.

For My Mom
(English)

My mommy dearest,
From my heart,
I love you so much,
with all my love.

I put the rhyme to music and it became a song. (Huayno, typical music from the Andes, or sung to the Arroz con Leche tune). It goes like this:

A mi Mamá
(Spanish)

Mamita querida
de mi corazon
yo te quiero mucho
con todo mi amor.

Por eso te traigo flores
por eso te canto yo
por eso te traigo flores
con gran emocion.
