About the Gabrielinos

The Gabrielinos are also known as the Tongva.

The Gabrielinos lived on the mainland and on the islands of the Los Angeles basin and its surrounding valleys. The area has been inhabited for as long as 10,000 years, but the specific date of the arrival of the Gabrielinos is not known. They were a people of the sea and they lived mainly by fishing and shellfish harvesting, by hunting wild deer and antelope, and by gathering roots and seed.

According to UCLA's website, "Today, it is estimated that a few hundred to a few thousand Tongva still live in California."
