Voici une version légèrement différente de cette comptine issue de The Nursery Rhyme Book, édité par Andrew Lang et illustré par L. Leslie Brooke (1897):
"JACKY, come give me thy fiddle,
If ever thou mean to thrive:"
"Nay; I'll not give my fiddle
To any man alive.
"If I should give my fiddle,
They'll think that I'm gone mad,
For many a joyful day
My fiddle and I have had."
Seuls les deux premiers vers changent : "JACKY, viens me donner ton violon / si jamais tu comptes aller de l'avant (prospérer)"…
The Little Mother Goose (1912), illustré par Jessie Willcox Smith, donne cette version :
"John, come sell thy fiddle,
And buy thy wife a gown."
"No, I'll not sell my fiddle,
For ne'er a wife in town."
Traduction française
"Jean, viens vendre ton violon
Et achète une robe à ta femme."
"Non, je ne vendrai pas mon violon
Pour aucune épouse dans la ville."
