Ayako Egawa wrote from Japan about the New Year’s tradition called Hatsumode. Here’s her letter that I received on New Year’s Day…
Happy New Year!
In Japan, the new year holiday is our biggest holiday and we have lots of customs as part of the new year celebration. One of the popular traditional practices for the New Year is hatsumode 初詣. Hatsumode means to go to a shrine or temple for the first time in the new year and it incorporates the wish that “the new year is a good year”. Many people made a line at a shrine to pray for a new year’s wish near my mother’s house today.
