Cinderella Dressed in Yellow – Jump Rope Rhyme with Recording

Marisa taught me this jump rope rhyme below (many of you might know some version of it)…

Listen to Cinderella Dressed in Yellow – MP3

Cinderella Dressed in Yellow
Jump Rope Song

Cinderella
Dressed in yellow
Went to kiss a prince,
By mistake,
Kissed a snake.
How many doctors
Did it take,
Was it,
One!
Two!
Three!
Four!
Five…

Game Instructions

Jump rope while reciting the rhyme. When you get to the counting part, you jump on each number. If you miss, you stop. Whatever number you’re on, that’s the number of doctors Cinderella needs!

Please feel free to let us know about the version of the Cinderella rhyme that you know or other jump rope rhymes in the comments below.

-Mama Lisa

Thanks to Marisa for contributing and reciting this rhyme, and for explaining how to play the jump rope game!

  1. Linda Austin Says:

We know it as “Cinderella dressed in yellow, went downstairs to kiss a fellow. Made a mistake, kissed a snake,” etc. Also, “Cinderella dressed in green, went downstairs to eat ice cream. Made a mistake, ate a snake,” etc. Or, “Cinderella dressed in pink, went downstairs to wash the sink. Made a mistake, washed a snake,” etc. You can make up rhymes for the colors Cinderella was dressed in.

My question is did anyone else jump to that terrible rhyme, “Fudge, fudge, call the judge,” about throwing the baby down the elevator? We never gave the lyrics a second thought.

  2. karen white Says:

I have a friend whose little grandaughter only recited “Cinderella kissed her fella”
I don’t remeber the kissing a snake part of this rhyme but perhaps you are correct. I thought Cinderella went to the ball and kissed her fella.

No, I don’t ever recall “Fudge, fudge, call the judge”. That is hardly polictically correct nowadays and most parents would have a fit and sue whoever taught their child that rhyme.

  3. Freddy Says:

It goes:” Fudge, fudge, call the judge! Mama’s had a new born baby! Wrap it up in tissue paper, send it down the elevator. Twins, triplets, boy, girl”…and you repeat the twins etc. until you miss or run out…this was how we sang it in Ohio and Indiana. I think some of these different versions are dependant on region. Cinderella, by the way, went upstairs to “kiss her fella”…another interesting aside…kids yelled “Allie allie oxen free” or “allie allie in come free”, unless your dad was in the Army…then it was “allie allie infantry!”

  4. babaloo Says:

this is how i learned the fudge fudge song its kind weird though:
fudge fudge call the judge mama’s having a baby daddy’s going crazy wrap it up in tissue paper throw it down the elevator first floor stop second floor spin around third floor touch the ground fourth floor get outta town i forgot the rest though

  6. Alexandra Says:

    I learned it like this:

    “Cinderella, dressed in yella*
    Went upstairs t’ kissa** fella
    Accident’lly kissed a snake
How many doctars*** will it take?”

*yellow, but you say it “yella” so that it will rhyme
**kiss a, but it was always pronounced “kissa”
***doctors, but it was always pronounced “doctars”

  7. Jasmine Says:

    I thought it was….
    “Cinderella dressed in yellow,
went downstairs to kiss her fellow,
She made a mistake and kissed a snake,
How many doctors did it take?
    One…Two…Three…etc.”

  8. Kim Says:

I was thinking about the “fudge fudge” rhyme recently after seeing a childhood friend, so I googled it. Here are the lyrics from the Chicago suburbs in the late 1950s:

    Fudge, fudge, call the judge
    Mama’s got a new-born baby
    It isn’t a girl
    It isn’t a boy
    It’s just an ordinary baby
Wrap it up in tissue paper
    Send it down the elevator
First floor – miss! (deliberately miss)
Second floor – miss! (deliberately miss)
Third floor – kick it out the door (kick while jumping)
Mama don’t want her baby no more.

  9. Brittny Says:

Ok nowadays the mamas new born baby thing iz mamas havin a baby dad is goin crazy if its a boy ill give it a toy if its a twin ill wrap it up in toillet paper send it down a elevator

  10. Barbara Says:

    I remember it as
    Fudge Fudge Call the judge
Mama’s got a new born baby
    I’m not lying
    It won’t stop crying
Wrap it up in tissue paper
    Send it down the elevator
–First floor STOP (jumper stops the rope by landing on it)
–Second floor MISS (jumper misses by landing with one foot on each side of the rope)
–Third floor TURN AROUND (jumper spins while jumping)
–Fourth floor TOUCH THE GROUND (jumper touches the ground with fingertips between jumps)
–Fifth floor GET OUTTA TOWN! (jumper runs out and takes one end of the rope – without breaking the rhythm – so that girl gets a turn to jump, and so on, and so on, etc.)

I grew up in a small town in the late 60s and early 70s and it never occurred to any of us that this rhyme might be politically incorrect. The innocence of youth, I suppose…I can see now (as an adult) how the rhyme could be offensive, but we just never thought like that as kids. It was just a silly rhyme to sing while skipping rope.

  11. Harly quinn Says:

i thought it went Cinderella dressed in yella went to kiss a little fella made a mis-take and kissed- uh- snake how many-doc-tors did it take 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9……

  12. Ashley Says:

Cinderella dressed in yella went up stairs to kiss a fella made a mistake and kissed a snake how many doctors will it take? 1 2 3 ect.

  13. Katie Says:

I just googled the Cinderella jump rope song because I remembered TWO versions that we used to sing and can only remember one. The one I remember goes:
    Cinderella dressed in yella
went upstairs to kiss her fella
made a mistake and kissed a snake
how many doctors did it take?
    1..2…3…

And it seems that’s the one everyone here knows, but I remember the other version didn’t have a snake in it, and I don’t remember what happened when she got upstairs, but I think the question was “how many kisses did it take?” Like maybe he was asleep? I can’t figure out the rhyme though. I’m thinking “wake” and “take” but I don’t know the rest.

  14. Emily Says:

    I remember…

    Cinderella dressed in yella,
by mistake she kissed a snake!
How many docters did it take?
    (etc.)
    And this really funny one

    Cinderella dressed in purple,
went upstairs to kiss steve urcle
by mistake she kissed a steak!
how many docters did it take?
    (etc.)
    Cinderella dressed in Tan,
went downstairs to wash the pans,
by mistake she washed a snake!
how mant docters did it take.

  16. Benjamin Davis Says:

This doesn’t partain to any of the preceeding intro’s, this is actually one that my cousin (_____) told me:

    Kiss my Akka-Bakka,
    My Soda-Crakka,
    My GG-O,
    Your Sterio,

    Yo mamma,
    Yo daddy,
    Yo greasy, greasy gran-mamy

    She 49,
    She drink that wine,
    She hoola-hoop,
    She Think she cute,

She ain’t nuin’ but a ol’ prostitue

  17. Pam Says:

Here’s how I learned it (1950’s, chicago area)

    Cinderella, dressed in yellow,
Went downtown to meet her fellow,
On the way her girdle busted,
    How many people were disgusted?

Ten, twenty, thirty, (etc., the jump rope goes faster at this point).

  18. Brianna McCornell Says:

    Cinderelle dressed in yellow,
    Who will she marry?
    A rich man,
    A poor man,
    A doctor,
    A lawyer

this is one many kids sing now, cause me and my friends sung in elementry school, now im in middle school and im surprised i remembered it :)

  19. heather Says:

    my favorite was:

i went to a Chinese restaurant to buy a loaf of bread, bread, bread,
he rapped it up in tissue paper and this is what he said, said, said,
my name is kaylo, piccolo, piccolo kaylo, come back birdie, pauly, wally,
whiskey, Elvis in the back seat drinkin diet pepsi, chow down meow,
chef boyardee huh!! that is the southern Ohio version….

and then we use to do one that was kinda creepy…

One bright day in the middle of the night, two dead boys got up to fight, back to back they faced each other, pulled out knives and shot each other, two deaf policemen heard this noise, came and shot those two dead boy, if you don’t believe this lie is true, you can ask the blind man who saw it all too.

  20. girlwthepink Says:

I found the other version on another jump rope rhymes page

    Cinderella dressed in yellow
Went downstairs to kiss her fellow.
How many kisses did she give?
One, two, three, four, five . . .

  21. Nette60 Says:

    Another take on it:

    “Cinderella dressed in white,
    Went upstairs to say goodnight.
How many seconds did it take?
One, two, three, four, five . . .

    “Cinderella dressed in yellow
    Went inside to eat marshmallows.
how many marshmallows did she eat?
One, two, three, four, five . . .”

  22. Lisa Says:

    That’s great!

  23. Elle Müller Says:

This reminds me of a jump-rope/clapping rhyme I heard in Guantanamo Bay Cuba, circa 1990.

This rhyme had Cinderella pronounced as ‘Cind’rella’, and some said the same rhyme with the name ‘Miss Susie’ instead of Cind’rella.

Similar to tune of, ‘Miss Susie had a steamboat’.
    -=-

    Ladies, gents, and kiddies too,
    Cind’rella’s gonna dance!
She’s gonna boogie for a dude,
I think she has a chance!

    She’s gonna turn herself around,
    she’ll go shimmy all about!
She’s gonna bend and touch the ground,
she’ll let her panties fall down!

    She never went to college!
    She never went to school!
But when she gets back from the dance,
    She’ll be a nasty fool!

    Cind’rella’s dressed in yella,
    she’s skipping all about!
Went up to kiss a fella,
    and then they messed about!

    Cind’rella kissed a big snake,
    she’s swollen, oh so large!
How many doctors will it take?
    I wonder what they’ll charge!

    20, 40, 60, and 80…. [etc.]
[continue counting until another kid jumps in, or fellow clapper turns around!]

[switch tempo to ‘fudge, fudge, call the judge’]
    Fudge! Oh Fudge!
    Call the judge!
Cinderella’s got a new born baby!
    I’m not lyin’,
    It won’t stop cryin!
Here I thought Cinderella a lady!
She wrapped it up in toilet paper,
and sent it down the elevator!

    Boy? Girl? Really, who knows!?
    Boy? Girl? Really, who knows!?
[Repeat until another kids jumps in/out or clapper turns around.]

[Tempo switches back to Miss Susie’s steamboat.]

    Cind’rella took back the baby,
    she named him Tiny Tim.
She put him in her great big bath
to see if he could swim!

He drank up all the water,
he ate up all the soap,
he tried to eat the bathroom,
but it wouldn’t go down his throat!

    Cinderella called the doctor,
    the doctor called the nurse,
    both knocked up the lady
    with the alligator purse!

    Then down went the doctor,
    then down went the nurse;
and then down went the lady
    with the alligator purse!

    -BURP-
    Up came the doctor!
    up came the nurse!
    up came Cinderelly
    with the alligator purse!

    -=-=-

This reminds me of a very similar Cinderella rhyme!

    Cinderella,
    dressed in white!
    Went upstairs
    to say goodnight!

How many seconds did it take?
    1… 2… 3… [until a kid jumps out]

    Cinderella,
    redressed in yella,
    Went upstairs after dark
    to kiss her fella.

    Made a mistake,
    and kissed a big snake!
    Came downstairs
    With a bellyache!

    She’s so swollen,
    oh so large!
    I wonder just what
    the doctors charge!
    20, 40, 60, and 80…. [etc.]
[continue counting until another kid jumps in!]
