Brittany was an independent country until 1532. The Duchess Ann of Brittany married the king of France, and Brittany has been part of France ever since.
Brittany is called Breizh in the Breton language. Breton is a Celtic language closely related to Welsh and Cornish. The Breton flag is called "Gwenn ha du" which means "White and black".
