Asmidar wrote to me, "I am from Singapore. Singapore is basically made up of four different races. They are Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian. I am a Malay and I speak both English and Malay. I am sending you a song entitled 'Singapura' which means Singapore in Malay. It is a very popular song in my country and almost every Singaporean is familiar with it."

Hi Lisa,

English is the first language taught to everyone in Singapore. I learnt this song as a child and it has always been in English.

According to Hamidah Bte Puteh, the Malay version of Singapura, oh Singapura is the original. "The [above] version... is the recently revamped and commercialised (pop) version in English. The words are totally different."

Singapura
(Malay version)

Singapura, oh Singapura,
Saya hormat selamanya
Singapura, oh Singapura,
Negeriku yang sangat permai
Tiap pemuda sedia membelanya
Bekerja giat Bertekad bulat
Singapura, oh Singapura,
Saya hormat selamanya
